The Gothic Cathedral of Clermont-Ferrand

Once again, this year, Air Corsica flies directly between Corsica and Auvergne with flights between Ajaccio and Clermont-Ferrand. From 20th May to 23rd September, you can venture yourself in this town, in Puy-de-Dôme that contains unsuspected treasures - by the island airline.

The city of Clermont-Ferrand has a XIII century majestic gothic cathedral which rises to the sky and majestically overlooks the hill of the historic center. The currently construction site of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption Cathedral began in 1248, under the leadership of architect Jean Deschamps and during the episcopate of Hughes de La Tour.

It stands on the site of earlier churches as confirmed by its crypt. It took seven centuries to complete! Later it was the architect Viollet-le-Duc who, in the 19th century, built the three spans, the portal and the west arrows. Overall, the cathedral of Clermont-Ferrand is inspired by the radiant Gothic of Ile-de-France department. It is also the majestic setting of a unique set of stained-glass windows, including Romanesque lancets, and sublime murals.

Also to discover in Clermont-Ferrand: the medieval quarter composed of bastides and mansions, the Romanesque Basilica of Notre-Dame-du-Port, a UNESCO World Heritage, the Jade square and its fountains, magnolias and tulip trees ,also the bronze statue of the city's mascot, the bold Gallic Vercingetorix, sword in his fist on his upright horse, sculpted by Bartholdi.
