Volcanic and full of surprises, Clermont-Ferrand is an authentic and intense city that can surprise the most curious.

Former Auvergne capital and dual city, Clermont-Ferrand is mostly known for its setting, comprising volcanos whose contours give it its unusual and well-known appearance. The city is rather dark, mainly because the buildings in the heart of the city were built of andesite, the volcanic stone of Volvic, but its heart and soul are definitely warm. Let your curiosity overtake you and push open the doors to discover all the marvels of the city, but you are unlikely to be disappointed during your stay.
One of the most important touristic points of interest in Clermont-Ferrand is of course the sublime gothic cathedral, Notre-Dame de l’Assomption. It soars up to the sky, overlooking the city from the top of the hill of the historic centre and makes an impression by its very singularity, the colour of the volcanic stone from which it has been constructed. Inside, there are stained-glass windows and murals which are certainly worth a look.
Your tourist visit to Clermont-Ferrand will give you the chance to walk through the Place de Jaude. The nerve centre of the city, it is here that monuments, statues and large shops all rub shoulders. You can, among others, admire the Saint-Pierre-des-Minimes church, constructed in the 17th century, as well as the Opéra-Théâtre, erected on the site of a former Halle aux Toiles, or even the statues of general Desaix de Nanteuil and Vercingetorix by Bartholdi.
