La Presqu'île de La Revellata (The Revellata Peninsula)
You do not know the Balagne ? Air Corsica will help you discover it in a few wing beats ! This area of the west coast of the island, among the most beautiful in Corsica, is full of wonders such as the must see Revellata Peninsula : the sky, the sun and the sea are waiting for you...
La Revellata is an overflow of land about 3 kilometres south of Calvi, offering a taste of its wilderness so characteristic of the Balagne. It is easily reached by coast taking the RD81 towards the Chapelle de Notre Dame dela Serra (Chapel of Our Lady of the Serra) and Galeria/Porto. This site consists of many rocky coves, two fine sandy beaches (the Alga and Acilluccia) and a coastal path which is accessible to all.
This rocky promontory, which goes out 2.5 kilometres into the sea, prefigures the very beautiful wild coast that extends to the south of the city. Because of its size, its wild character, its spectacular cliffs and the contrast it forms with the high mountains that dominate the Calvi plain, it represents a unique element of the Balanin landscape. From the cove of Recisa to Punta Vaccaghja, the peninsula presents a distinct landform and a very rocky coastline : the west façade has sheer cliffs up to a hundred metres high while the eastern façade tilts more gently towards the sea.
This is where one of the most important lighthouses is situated on the Beautiful Island : the Revellata lighthouse which demarcates an area from l'Île-Rousse to the Gulf of Girolata. This monument was constructed in 1838, after the setting up of a commission which decided to encircle the island with five lighthouses of the first order (the Iles Sanguinaires in the south-west, Pertusato and Chiappa in the south, La Revellata to the west and La Giraglia to the north). It was lit for the first time in December 1844. The beginning of the lighthouse's construction corresponds to the rise of the neighbouring city, Calvi.
It is a square tower with exposed stones standing on a rectangular base, and rises over a hundred metres above the sea. The lighthouse houses a Centre for Studies and Oceanographic Research, the STR + ARESO centre, controlled from Bastia.
A site " lighthouse " not to be missed, with Air Corsica, the wonders of Corsica, the Balagne and the surroundings of Calvi !
