Calvi On The Rocks
It is in Calvi when the summer is in full swing with the rhythm of a frenzied electronic music festival baptised " Calvi On The Rocks ". For a week, all the seaside establishments offer musical evenings animated by many internationally known and recognised DJs. Fancy an all-nighter ? The event is celebrating its fifteenth anniversary this year and will run from 30 June to 5 July with an exceptional programme that all " clubbers " will appreciate ! Calvi's Little Ibiza " made in Corsica " ... !
Located in the northwest of the island, the city of Calvi with L'Île-Rousse constitutes one of the two major agglomerations of the Balagne region. But Calvi does have a rich historical heritage of which Christopher Columbus would be the figurehead : many insist that he was born there ... One thing is certain : the explorer who discovered the " New World "lived there.
A must see in Calvi : the citadel ramparts tour ! Symbol of the city of Calvi, it was erected at the time of the Genoese occupation. The ramparts consist of three bastions (San Giorgio, Malfetano and Teghiale) and curtain walls. The citadel, its ramparts and the Tour du Sel (Salt Tower), properties of the commune, are all three classified as Historical Monuments. The cobbled streets of the old city are picturesque and the view of the bay from the ramparts is spectacular. The citadel is home to some of the most beautiful monuments such as the Saint-Antoine Oratory, the Poudrière (Powder Keg), the Sampiero Barracks (former Palace of Governors) and the house of Christopher Columbus. A visitor's trail has been set up by the Calvi Tourist Office to better explore this monument steeped in history. Along the way, Laurent Giubegga's house where Napoleon I stayed in 1793.
