The Natural Reserve of the Strait of Bonifacio was created in 1999 by the Department of Environment and the Local Authority of Corsica to preserve and develop the natural heritage of this international strait which shelters marine environments and exceptional shores : the Lavezzi archipelago, the Cerbicales islands, the Bruzzi Peninsula, the islets of the Monks, the Bonifacio cliffs, the Ventilegne lagoon…

The largest natural reserve in Metropolitan France, the Strait of Bonifacio extends to 80, 000 hectares between Corsica and Sardinia, in a landscape of limestone cliffs and granite chaos. The site shelters 37 % of the Mediterranean’s remarkable species. This exceptional environment is home to a cosmopolitan flora combining alpine and African influences as well as a strict endemism sometimes confined to certain islets (velvety silene, beard of Jupiter). The richness of the underwater fauna (posidonia meadow, giant limpets, large mother-of-pearl, gorgonian coral, groupers, etc.) and birds such as the European shag and the butternut puffin is truly remarkable.

Frequentation of this territory (150, 000 people per year to Lavezzi, 20, 000 people over the whole of the reserve in certain afternoons in August) are a testament to this tourist attraction.
