The Japanese Garden

Located close to the former rampart, the japanese Garden of Toulouse will surprise you by its exoticism in the heart of the city. Very close to the administrative city and to the congress center, its surroundings are favourable to meditation, peace and quiet. Labelled « remarkable garden », it is a perfect summary of the Kyoto’s gardens from the 14th to 16th century. The main features of these japanese gardens are represented : mineral, vegetable and aquatic worlds are implemented, adorned with typical decorative elements such as the boundary wall, bridges, lanterns, pavilion tea…
Taking place in the heart of the district of Compans Cafarelli, in the north of Toulouse City Center, the japanese gardenwas created in 1981 in reponse to the former Mayor of the city, Pierre Baudis, who had enjoyed this type of garden during his travels, in particular in dublin.
This 7000 square meters closed containment is a part of a 10 hectares green area and offers a botanical variety from Far East which is a rare occurrence in a southern city such as Toulouse. The Research Department of gardens and green spaces conceived it as a place for meditation. There stand a mineral garden, a typically japanese red wood bridge leading to an islet allegorically representing paradise. Isolated from the whole park by a green curtain and a hill, the japanese garden of Toulouse consists of a dry garden and a crane island, a turtle island and nine rocks, a lake, a tea pavilion and a garden composed of a dry waterfall, japanese steps, a lantern, a beautiful red bridge, a paradise islet, a mount Fuji and stone « of the three saints ». It also contains a Taisen Deshimaru Master bust, who founded many zen dojos in the 70’s in France.
In 1993, the Toulouse japanese garden was awarded the national Grand prix of flowering.
