The Dore mountains are a stratovolcano, a composite set erected over a very long period from multiple igneous rocks. Subsequently it was erosion (torrential or glacial) that finished to shape the scenery by long notching the landscape, leaving in relief volcanic chimneys and lava veins. Behind the Choussy baths (in La Bourboule) remains one of the most beautiful "fault mirrors" known to geologists, an intact witness to this antediluvian cataclysm. This is today the great theatre of the Dore mountains!
In addition to its volcanic interest, Mount Dore has also become a spa and winter sports resort located in the Dordogne Valley, in the heart of the Sancy massif dominated by the Puy-de-Sancy which peaks at 1.886 meters above sea level.
