The Lumière Museum

In 1895, the two brothers Auguste and Louis Lumière that were born in Lyon decided to turn their city into the birthplace of the seventh art by creating the “Cinematograph”.
The Lumière Museum has been built where they created the “Cinematograph”. The Museum allows visitors to discover Lumière brothers’ creations through projections and interactive activities organised on the Lumière Castle four floors, on the Antoine’s villa, the father of the famous inventors of the modern cinema.
The Lumière Institute was created in 1982 and has been established in this “New Art/ Art Deco” castle which was founded between 1899 and 1901 where the Lumières family used to live. In this unique facility composed of four different floors and 21 rooms fitted into museum rooms. The Museum offers a histiorical and scientific tour about Louis Lumière’s creation the “Cinematograph”. Here is what is planned: film projections from Lumières Brothers’periode with explanation, first cameras exhibitions, color and relief photographs, unusual objects and other inventions. A movie theatre named "Le Hangar" has also been established in the garden. This is the place where the first movie of the modern cinema’s history has been produced. At its time this place was the biggest European factory of photographic plates.The last relic of the Lumière factories and the first set of the “Cinematograph”. The “Hangar” has been transformed into a huge cinema where the Lumière Institute broadcasts nowadays extremely rare movies and marvellous retrospectives through daily sessions.
