L'Atomium
Traveling to Brussels thanks to the direct flights of Air Corsica between Ajaccio, Bastia and the Brussels South Charleroi Airport , is the perfect opportunity to discover a strange monument : the Atomium.
Built for the 1958 Universal Exposition, at the time when atom was in the center of all scientific concerns, this monument represents the conventional mesh of the iron crystals at an impressive scale as it has been enlarged 165 billions times. It is also referring to the 9 Belgian provinces of this era through the 9 spheres that are exposed. Thus, as much as the Manneken-Pis, this strange building has become a symbol of the city, so much so that, in 2016 when it was wholly rennovated, the country emitted a 2 euros coin facing the Atomium.
For the figures enthusiats, you will appreciate that the monument is 102 meters height and weighs more than two tons. The nine spheres of a 18 meters diameter weighs individually 250 tons.
Master piece of the 20th century, the Atomium of Brussels is entirely composed of steel and aluminium, to represent an avant-garde style. It has thus become an international touristic attraction and also the most popular monument of the city and of Europe.
Today, the Atomium propose to its visitors a surrealist walk through pipes and spheres, a 360° spectacular scenery on Brussels and its surroundings, the possibility to have a breakfast at a height of 95 meters thanks to a gourmet restaurant and another one more traditional, a permanent exhibition about the history of the building, a temporary exhibition on various themes, teaching urban workshop for children, concerts, exhibition of films, conferences and a shop full of original gifts labelled to the Atomium Colors.
Traveling with Air Corsica is also the opportunity to explore Europe and its main touristic attractions, taking advantage of direct flights at the begining of Ajaccio and Bastia to Brussels.
