Designated as a Unesco world Heritage Site since december 7th 1996 , the Canal du Midi is a great heritage of architectural piece of work of which concept dates back to the Ancient Antiquity and had been no more than a project for centuries. Pierre Paul Riquet and his uncommon persistence could realize this unbelievable project consisting in the creation of a 240 kilometers waterway, of a 10 to 20 meters width and 2 meters depth connecting the Garonne river (and as a consequence the Atlantic Ocean) to the Mediterranean sea.

As the building was developing, and in particular in Languedoc region, the Canal du Midi had to face obstacles that were overcome by the building of singular work pieces at that time.

The Canal du Midi is not only a simple ribbon traveling through the south of France from Toulouse to Sete, but also a touristic place composed of 23 main sites to discover in order to assess it consistently. And above all, from the Montagne Noire (Black Mountain), then from the Isthme Gaulois (Gallic Isthmus) at the place where the waters takes two different direction connecting Atlantic to Méditerranean side.
